5.5.8 Cell Formatting Tips

Looks like Excel cells huh?
When using Excel text colors should really be limited to two colors black text is always in style. Using the banding function of alternating colors increases readability. The best way to display titles is by using the merge and center command located in the Excel ribbon. Using the wrap text function allows for a lengthy amount of text to be formatted to the cell to increase readability.

As for dates Excel recognizes them in different styles and has many formats for display.

When displaying numbers excel can format the numbers to have the dollar sign $ up to including decimal points for displaying cents. Excel has several formats for numbers ranging from general, number, currency, accounting, date, time, percentage, fractions, scientific, text, special, even custom if you feel that the aforementioned list does not suit your needs.

  1. Yes, black text is always in style as it shows up well against most colors!

Sometimes, for emphasis, I change the background or cell fill (in Excel) to black and text to white for emphasis ^_^

Banding rows/alternating colors, merge and center, and wrap text definitely help with readability and the visual beauty of the spreadsheet. Orientation and indentation also help :-)

  2. There are many styling and formatting options in Excel to be creative yet professional. I agree banding alternate colors increases readability, so much easier to follow along especially if there's a lot of data.

  7. Cell formatting remembering the many ways that formatting is used on different platforms is very difficult. Different platforms have different formatting and some that are similar. The lesson material is good at showing what to do, but to memorize specific formatting can get confusing.

  11. I never knew we could do any of this stuff till this class it was all hit and miss for me. I would sometimes change my writing on my email to script or bold and then change the color to blue. Never knew about being able to wrap text around a picture. I would always use the spacebar. Old school. LOL.

  14. You gave some useful advice on how to use Excel in a professional manner. The spreadsheet does look more organized with black text, and merging the title columns also gives it a more polished appearance.
