Portfolio Work Critique

We are approaching the last few weeks of this Fall 2022 semester and final assignments are right on the horizon. Subtracting thanksgiving week and the subsequent weeklong resting period after all of that food. If your a major procrastinator then finals assignments are right around the corner. I have to make professional portfolio quality work and I need honest critiques on my shots.

What do you like about the image?
What could be improved on?
Should I reshoot this from another angle?
Would you buy this and hang it up on a wall?
Composition - Clarity - Contrast
If the image needs additional post processing provide feedback.

I want feedback on my photos because I am actuslly going to print a 7-10 of them for the Photography 101 Final assignment.

  1. I am not qualified to comment on any technical aspect as my photography qualification is just using my iPhone 6 to snap photos so I will just comment as a layperson ^_^

The orange moon because of the lunar eclipse next The Strat is surreal. Do you have a closer shot of the lunar eclipse?

The Las Vegas cityscape from Los Feliz Street (east edge of the Las Vegas valley) is a little counterintuitive to me as the hotels and casinos in the background beg for my attention but the lone resident house in focus on the foreground and the partial lighting on the left distract me.

I never knew the Las Vegas City Hall building had such a cool design.

The clarity and vibrant colors of the leaves contrasted against the blurry background/Bokeh -- I learned this term from you -- is eye-catching!

Thank you for the fifth photo of the City of Las Vegas arch at nighttime. The pink/purple lighting really pops and the empty street really yields the focus to the arch. Anyway to photoshop out the advertising billboard in the background?

My wife is a photographer and I asked her to take a gander at the photos you shared in your blog posts :-)

    1. I do not have any closer pictures of the total lunar eclipse unfortunately. I have yet to acquire a quality telephoto lens aside from renting from CSN.

I will look into darkening the advertisement

  2. It's so beautiful! It's wonderful! I don't know what to say. I just want to silently watch these photos again and again!

  3. The photos look great. Thank you for sharing.

I love the Los Feliz view of Vegas. My friends took me there when I first settled in Vegas. The angle chosen is very far but still worth it. Maybe next time zoom in closer to the strip view.

The shot of the moon by the Strat looks great. I want to learn how to capture the moon in the view finder and take a visible shot like yours.

The view of Las Vegas City Hall is awesome. I have not seen it at night with the lights on. Nice view as well.

I want to learn how to do the same shot, with the background blurred and the main shot in focus. The shot of the multi-colored leaves is really cool.

Nice timing on the Las Vegas sign shot, when there was nobody on the street and sidewalks. What time of the day did you take the shot? It looks really great, I hope to take great shots like that soon since I am taking Photography 101 as well.

  4. Here's my unqualified feedback:
Strat - I wish the eclipse was a little larger, it seems so far away (I know it literally is super far away, but it's so small compared to the Strat). And I appreciate that the Strat is centered perfectly in the shot.

Shot from Los Feliz - The white line on the left side and the house with the bright light shining on it in the center bottom are very distracting. That's where my eyes were drawn to first. If there's a way to crop them both out and make it look more like a panoramic shot, that would look cool.

City Hall - This I must say is my favorite. It's probably because the clean lines and the pop of green on the bottom from the trees contrasts nicely with the building.

Fall Bokeh - This is my second favorite. This captures what fall is about. It's about change. The leaves are changing from green, to yellow, to red, to brown. And the lights in the background give it a nice twinkling touch.

Sign at the Strat - I think you took a great shot of this sign. I don't know what time you went there with no people or cars around, but this looks like something you could put on a postcard.

Overall, I think your photos are wonderful. I hope your photography professor feels the same. :)

  5. The photos look amazing.

Strat and Moon- This photo is my favorite. I like how the colors flow and the lighting on Strat is not too bright. I agree with everyone else that the moon should be the focus and made larger.

Los Feliz - The line on the left is a little distracting. I really like that you included the house with the light because it shows that there is more to Las Vegas than the strip.

Las Vegas City Hall – This is a nice picture, I like the clean lines, but I feel that it needs to be zoomed out a little more to see more of the trees.

Fall Bokeh – This picture is very vibrant. I like how you blurred the background to focus on the leaves. I wouldn’t change anything.

Las Vegas Sign- I wondered how this looked at night, you did an amazing job taking this picture. I would add the shutter speed effect you mentioned in one of your previous posts (10/15/2022) while cars are driving.

You have a true talent. Can’t wait to see more of your photography in the blog posts to come.

  6. As always, all your photos are amazing. If I am to critique them, I say this with a creative open mind.

Strat: The moon in comparison to the Strat seem so minuscule, but the colors are amazing. The Strat is very clear even to the detail of the block lines. Overall it is perfectly centered even with the moon hanging above it. The black background makes all the colors pop and it is vibrant.

Los Feliz St.: The first thing that caught my eye was the edge of the arena light. With the black background, it appears as a photo error. The elevation at which you took the photo is perfect, giving the scene an extended view of the valley, other than the foreground picture of the house. One suggestion is to crop the line from the far left and the lighter part of the house to just before the Strat on the right and minimize the skyward area. I believe it will give the picture a larger sense of purpose without too much of the black sky.

Las Vegas City Hall is perfect. No changes needed.

Fall Bokeh is also perfect. I love the way the blue blurs giving the leaves the focus they deserve. This is an amazing photo and I would definitely buy it and hang it on my wall.

Las Vegas sign. It is beautifully centered and bright. Unfortunately, the sign behind it is what caught my attention first. If there is a way you can blend it away with the dark background, it would be perfect. I love that there is no cars or people around. I would say poetically, it represents the dead of the night.

  7. Kevin, these are amazing shots. I am impressed at your progress!

The Strat – I absolutely love the composition of this shot. I don’t think I would change anything about it. There is a higher exposure of light in the center of the Strat and I personally would have taken a brush to it to dim it down just a bit because it takes away from the spectacular moon. I do not think there is a better angle unless you had a drone! LOL I would consider buying this image. I cannot tell where your focal point is due to not having your full resolution image. The contrast works for the time of day.

Las Vegas – I honestly do not like this picture. I have tried taking similar images and cannot blame you when taking a shot like this because it is hard when you do not have the right equipment. In my example I do not own a good enough lens that can let in enough light for night panoramic shots like these. My tripod is flimsy and have no remote to control the shutter. The focus is off and you can tell you attempted to regain brightness with setting a long exposure. The streak of light that could possibly be a plane helicopter nearby. The focus seems to be on the house in front of you, which looks cool but not the purpose of the shot. I would not buy this one nor recommend that you print it.

Las Vegas City Hall – I love this angle of this building! What is bugging me is the fact that it is not particularly centered but that just makes me what to look at it even harder. The palms are a bit distracting, but I do not think there is much that we can do about those. I would try reshooting and aiming to center it a bit more and in a way that the palm trees do not take away from the view of the building. It also seems like there is a tiny bit of moment in the shot that is affecting the clarity, but I cannot say for sure. I would buy this picture if that focus on the building were to improve. It has a blue hue to it that I would probably dim down a bit and draw attention away from the palms because the building is pretty cool.

Fall Bokeh – This image has the potential of being a stock image. The focus looks to be blurring some of the main object (the center leaves) which bothers me a bit. The bokeh effect was achieved and accents the focused object so well. The contrast and temperature is on point and gives the picture that “Fall” vibe. I would purchase this image to use in something like a presentation or even an advertisement.

Las Vegas Sign The Strat – This picture along with the eclipse picture are my favorite. I would like to see the image in an editor just to see if it is level. It looks like it is leaning off the left a little bit. The sign has great focus on “Las Vegas” I absolutely love the color of the neon. The Sam & Ash billboard is taking away from the main objects of the image (the sign). I would dim that billboard down with a brush almost to where you do not have any light on that billboard since it is very distracting. I would buy this image for sure.

  8. I really loved observing all the images, and I agree with Mayra about the city hall picture. I noticed that the view wasn't really centered, but I totally understand what you were trying to capture. Looking at the Las Vegas sign picture really intrigued me because it looks straight out of a video game with all the lighting and shadows on the streets.

  9. Your first image : the lunar eclipse and the stratosphere.
What do you like about the image? Just how striking it is, it feels like its from a movie.
What could be improved on? was the yellow starburst on the top of the middle section right beneath the antenna intentional, the rule of thirds is being used the light distracts me from the moon and puts my eyes back on to the light, which I feel takes away from this beautiful photo.
Should I reshoot this from another angle? no, unless you have access to a helicopter; I feel like this is a great shot.
Would you buy this and hang it up on a wall? If that starburst wasn't there definitely, it feels like its right from a movie.
    Thank you for sharing Kevin.

  10. I am not a professional at this but I will give you my thoughts. I like the Moon in the Strat pic but what I don't like is the light glare on the Strat. It makes it look like its eyes on a robot kind of freak me out a bit so I wouldn't hang it on the wall. As for the second picture I like that one but the green in the trees is not connecting with me if they was gone i would hang it up. The third picture I would focus more on the branch in the middle. Like cropping out more of the background. Lastly the Vegas sign I really love this picture I would hang it up the way it is but if I could get this same photo without the orange cones it would make it even better.
